The Montreal Canadiens are in search of a spark, and a recent rumor added intrigue to their season. According to journalist Anthony Di Marco, the talented forward of the Anaheim Ducks, Trevor Zegras, remains available on the trade market. As that is precisely what the Canadiens need, you can't help but wonder if GM Kent Hughes might still covet Zegras.
Having been on the trade list for a long time now, the asking price for Zegras has probably become more flexible. In most competitive markets, once something has been on the market for some time, there is usually just a little room to wiggle in and negotiate, so this could be a good time for someone like Montreal to jump in.
Zegras's talent has only added to the hype. The player has flashed periods of brilliance and is considered by many one of the more promising young players in the NHL in terms of overall potential to become a league-wide star. His skill set could bring an element to the Canadiens that they don't currently possess, which is necessarily creating scoring opportunities.
A past report courtesy of Marco Normandin suggests that the Canadiens have, in fact, called about trading for Zegras during the 2024 draft. The proposed deal apparently involved Cole Caufield's close friend, meaning Kent Hughes has shown concrete interest in Zegras before.
Adding Trevor Zegras could bring that spark into a season-saving situation for the Canadiens. Knowing full well what Zegras is, with the forward now available perhaps this could be the perfect time for the Canadiens to revisit the possibility of a game-changing trade.
