For the most part, Patrick Kane has been received incredibly well in Detroit thus far, as he has become a fan favourite for a team that is looking to end their lengthy Stanley Cup Playoff drought. Now however, he's found himself on the wrong side of the fans after recent comments about Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews.
Ahead of the 2024 Hockey Hall of Fame inductions that include Red Wings icon Pavel Datsyuk, Kane has compared Matthews to him as Detroit take on the Toronto Maple Leafs on the big occasion.
Unsurprisingly, this comment hasn't gone over well with Red Wings fans, who believe that this was disrespectful to Datsyuk given all that he accomplished over his career in the league, including having the most incredible hands and one of the best highlight reels of any hockey player in history.
It's likely that Kane was simply trying to give Matthews a compliment while acknowledging the career of Datsyuk as he is honoured, but Datsyuk was truly one-of-one, and it's likely that we'll never see a player with his elite skillset again, at least not for a very long time.
Unfortunately for Kane, Matthews won't be playing in their contest as he would relish the opportunity to play against a team USA teammate, but it's clear that he has very high thoughts of Matthews, and while both will likely end up in the Hall of Fame, neither have the skillset that Daysyuk did.
