Pittsburgh Penguins Announce Two Injuries in Their Forward Core Amid Difficult Season
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been off to a rough start this season and things are only getting worse as the team just got hit with some new injury news.
Through 16 games, the Penguins have dropped to 6-8-2. This comes after the team made a late surge in an attempt to make the playoffs last season, which gave some fans hope that this year would be different. Clearly, things have not gone that way. In fact, things have been so bad that Tristian Jarry was sent down to the American Hockey League. One thing the team has had going for them is their health, despite the fact that they are the oldest team in the league, but now even that appears to be going by the wayside.
This morning, forwards Cody Glass and Kevin Hayes were both absent from the team's practice. Glass has been a regular in the team's bottom six this season and has 4 assists through 14 games, roughly putting him on pace for a career year, especially if he can start to find the back of the net. Hayes meanwhile, also has four points, three of which are goals.
Penguins head coach Mile Sullivan revealed after practice that Hayes is out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. Glass meanwhile, is out with a concussion that he sustained after Penguins defenseman Lars Eller accidentally collided with him in front of their own net.
Glass has a long history of injuries already in his young NHL career, including issues with concussions. As we now know, this is a very serious issue as repeated concussions frequently lead to serious brain damage and conditions such as CTE. The NHL has long ignored this issue but the NHLPA just officially created a committee looking into the issue.
Neither Glass nor Hayes was playing a huge role with the Penguins this season. That being said, the organization is not exactly overflowing with depth. Furthermore, they have not been good enough even with everyone healthy. As such, we may very well see the Penguins in the draft lottery this summer instead of the playoffs.
