The Chicago Blackhawks weren't expected to be a playoff team this year, but with higher hopes than what they've seen thus far, Luke Richardson has now been fired.

After landing Connor Bedard with the No. 1 overall pick a season ago and putting together a Calder Trophy winning season, the rebuild of the Chicago Blackhawks got a major kick start.

Unfortunately, the team around Bedard remains terrible, and after not being able to get anything out of them thus far, the Blackhawks have now officially parted ways with the 55-year old coach.

While expectations weren't overly high this season, the team expected to see more out of their core, and with an 8-16-2 record through 26 games played, the team just haven't showed any progress.

In three seasons with Chicago, Richardson has put together a 57-118-15 record, and given the talent he had it's not the most surprising statistic, with many believing this move was simply a matter of time.

The Blackhawks officially made the move on Thursday, with GM Kyle Davidson releasing this statement after the move:

«Today I made the difficult decision to move on from Luke as our head coach. We thank him for his efforts and contributions to the organization and our community. As we have begun to take steps forward in our rebuilding process, we felt that the results did not match our expectations for a higher level of execution this season and ultimately came to the decision that a change was necessary. We wish Luke and his family all the best moving forward.»

No one was expecting Chicago to make a Stanley Cup Playoffs push this season, but they were hoping to get more out of their young names, and with the hopes of ushering in a new era of success, they're now looking for a fresh start.

Ultimately, this move was a matter of when, not if, and after it's been made, Chicago will either look to pair a young coach to grow with this team or bring in a veteran to get the most out of them, but either way, it's a new era in Chicago with Bedard, Artyom Levshunov and now a new Head Coach leading the way.
