The body of 32-year-old Latvian basketball sensation Janis Timma was found in the stairwell of an apartment building in Moscow, having apparently fallen from such a height. Preliminary data testifies to the fact that he committed suicide.
He was coming off an incredible career with Zenit Saint Petersburg, VEF Riga, and Lakland Magic, the Orlando Magic's affiliate.
He was an exciting two-way small forward/shooting guard after he had been picked with the 60th selection by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2013 NBA Draft.
After becoming embroiled in an unnecessary controversy after playing in Liga Stavok, a Russian bookmaker's tournament, following international fallout stemming from their country's incursion in Ukraine, Janis Timma defended himself online with a post that precipitated serious online backlash.
Curiously enough, his death fell on his ex-wife Anna Sedokova's birthday, the famous Ukrainian singer and actress. The two got married in 2020 but filed for divorce early this year. A phone with a message from Anna Sedokova was found near the body.
After that, Sedokova posted an emotional message on Instagram requesting not to forward news about Timma's death in deference to his family.
Timma was born on July 2, 1992, in Kraslava, Latvia. Timma started his professional basketball in the Latvian Basketball League before making it big in top European leagues.
There were definitely some special moments in his career, probably most notably during his time with Baskonia and then playing in the NBA Summer League.
Meanwhile, the world of basketball said goodbye to a great personality while his legacy shows a bit of bittersweetness.
