Even before being named Toronto's captain, Auston Matthews has been invaluable to the Maple Leafs, keeping them in the fight for a Stanley Cup run.
However, Matthews has not been able to completely fulfill his role as a leader, as much of his time last month was healing from an injury he sustained during the preseason instead of being in the fight with the rest of his team.
Though he was cleared to return to the ice on November 30th, NHL Insider Chris Johnston revealed that Matthews reaggravated his injury and would not be in the lineup against the New York Islanders.
Fans frustrated over his absence, and ultimately Toronto's 6-3 loss to the Islanders, were hoping for an explanation behind what resulted in this change in condition.
Finally, NHL writer Luke Fox reported that Craig Berube admitted to what instance pushed Matthews back a few steps.
This occurred during their recent game against the Buffalo Sabres, when defenseman Dennis Gilbert cross-checked Matthews, forcing him onto the ice.
While it is nice to have an answer on the cause of his absence, it does not change his availability status, which remains day-to-day.
With so much of his season not at 100%, hopefully, Matthews can avoid any more aggravation to injury.
