John Tavares revealed what he hopes his future in the NHL will look like as the Maple Leafs approach the trade deadline.

Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs will have several tough decisions to make in the coming weeks as the March 7th trade deadline looms.

The organization will have to decide how much they want to commit to this club, knowing that they have two major players on expiring contracts.

Of course, those players would be former captain John Tavares, and superstar winger Mitch Marner.

Whether or not Marner will re-sign with the Leafs has become a major topic of discussion around the Leafs this year, and those talks will only get louder as the trade deadline and the end of the regular season draw nearer.

Marner has already drawn interest from around the league, including from two Western Conference teams that could pursue him heavily this summer if he makes it to market.

Marner's status could very well be the reason why Tavares has not signed an extension yet.

After all, the Leafs will probably want to have certainty with Marner's cap hit before they agree to a deal with Tavares, as they would then know exactly how much they can afford to give him.

That being said, Tavares went on the record today saying that he would love to get the deal done as soon as possible. He did recognize that it is not just about him though.

"I certainly would love to get it done. I mean, obviously the club has a lot going on. It's not just about me. I know management will do what they have to do at that time of year and whatnot. So, if we have the opportunity to get it done, I'd love to do that. If not, when that time comes, we'll get there. So, just looking forward to continuing my journey here as a Leaf - and obviously want it to continue past this season."

If Marner does walk in free agency, that would obviously give the Leafs much more cap space to work with, but it would also leave them with a massive hole on the wing.

Tavares could potentially play in that spot, but he is not getting any younger so the Leafs may have to look at all their options.
