Canucks GM search takes surprising turn as top names dropped
Elliott Friedman dropped a Canucks bomb Friday morning. Patrick Burke, Ray Whitney, and Ryan Martin have been told they're out of Vancouver's GM search.
That came on the 32 Thoughts podcast, with Bruce Garrioch's reporting backing the same names.

Friedman flagged positive things about Doan and Gold, while cautioning he might not have heard everything. Translation: the next Canucks GM is likely already inside the room.
Vancouver finished the season 25-49-8 for 58 points, dead last in the NHL. The goal differential was -100. That is not a typo.
Adam Foote's group went 9-27-5 at home. A Pacific Division team that couldn't win at Rogers Arena, in a building that used to eat opponents alive.
Doan and Gold emerge as the real contenders in Vancouver
Burke had been a popular external pick for weeks. Whitney brought the player-side credibility. Martin had the operational reputation from his Detroit and Edmonton runs.
All three got the call this week. None of them are walking into Rogers Arena as the next GM.
Why the pivot? Because ownership clearly wants someone who already knows the wreckage. The l10 was 4-6-0. The last game was a 1-6 loss in Edmonton. The roster needs surgery, not a tour.
Picking from inside the building is the corporate equivalent of asking the guy who watched the kitchen burn to cook dinner the next night. He knows what's missing. He also might know why it caught fire.
That decision lands on Foote's desk too. Any new GM inherits a coach hired in May 2025, a -100 team, and a fan base that has watched this franchise miss the bar over and over.
The next hire defines the next three years in Vancouver. And whoever it is will have to answer for a home record that looked closer to an expansion draft year than a hockey market that demands contention.
