Zach Benson stepped to the mic Sunday and said something you rarely hear in the middle of a playoff series.

The Buffalo Sabres forward thanked Mike Matheson for an act of fair play during Game 2 of their second-round matchup against Montreal.

"It's a war out there but when skates are flying around, obviously super good on him to protect my head." That's Benson, quoted by Priyanta Emrith on X.

A young Sabres forward publicly tipping his helmet to a Habs defender. In a chippy series. After the Xhekaj punch, the Norris hold, the Danault no-goal.

The Buffalo winger has been the most productive Sabres player in this round. The 20-year-old sits at 6 points across 8 playoff games, with 3 goals and a plus-4 rating.

Matheson is on the other side of that math. The 32-year-old defender plays a defensive role at 4.875 million per year. He had 7 goals and 30 assists in 78 games during the regular season.

St-Louis and Ruff prepare for Game 4 with respect on the record

Martin St-Louis has built the Canadiens around structure and accountability. Matheson is the quiet veteran piece of that identity.

The Benson quote suggests both rooms know what's on the line.

Hockey players don't acknowledge opposing players mid-series unless the gesture was real.

Lindy Ruff hasn't asked his young winger to tone anything down.

The Sabres need every point Benson can produce, and he's playing the best hockey of his short NHL career.

The regular season totals back that up. The Buffalo winger went 13 goals, 30 assists and 43 points in 65 games at plus-27.

The contract is 950 thousand. The production is well above the cap hit.

The series itself is tight. Buffalo won Game 1 at home 4-2. Montreal flipped the script in Game 2 with a 5-1 victory on the same ice.

Game 4 goes Tuesday at Bell Centre. The temperature isn't dropping.

Two viral moments came out of Game 3 alone, and the Sabres need to win on Habs ice or risk the math getting ugly.

Benson's quote will get buried by tomorrow. The hit list won't.

Hockey rivalries get framed by the loud moments. The quiet ones, like Matheson's, are what keep the room respectful when the game gets dirty.
