Buffalo is changing its look in a big spot. Luukkonen appears set to start, and that alone tells you Ruff is not satisfied with how this series has swung over the last 2 games.
That is the biggest pregame development on the Sabres side. Alex Lyon had been the guy, but after Buffalo gave up too much and dropped Games 2 and 3, Ruff is reaching for a reset.
It is easy to understand why. Montreal now leads the series 2-1, the building will be loud again, and the Sabres cannot afford another shaky night in net if they want to avoid falling into a near-impossible hole.
The goalie switch is not the only move either. Konsta Helenius is in, which gives Buffalo another notable change up front before one of its most important games of the spring.
Matthew Fairburn posted the morning lines, and Helenius landed on a line with Jason Zucker and Jack Quinn. That is not a minor shuffle. That is Buffalo trying to inject something new into the middle of the lineup.
The full forward groups showed more change than usual: Krebs with Thompson and Tuch, Benson with Norris and Doan, Zucker with Helenius and Quinn, and Malenstyn with McLeod and Greenway.
-
Sam Carrick looks to be the player coming out, and that changes the tone too. He was brought back to add bite and edge against Montreal, but this feels like Ruff deciding he now needs a different kind of game.
-
That makes this a real coaching moment. Ruff is not staying stubborn with the same script while the Canadiens grab momentum. He is turning two regulars over in the same night and betting that the response follows.
-
Luukkonen is the headline because that is where the risk lives. If he steadies the crease, Buffalo can calm the whole game down. If he struggles, the Sabres may spend the night chasing both the score and the series.
-
Helenius is the more interesting secondary angle. Young players can change the feel of a game fast, especially when a bench needs pace, skill, or just a different look.
Montreal still has the upper hand. The Canadiens have won 2 straight and are one win away from pushing Buffalo right to the edge.
So this is the clean read before puck drop. Lindy Ruff saw enough from Alex Lyon and Sam Carrick, made 2 major changes, and handed Game 4 to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with Konsta Helenius stepping into the mix.
