J-F Chaumont reports the Canadiens used the 26th pick in the first round on right winger Gleb Pugachyov.

The scouting tag is what stands out. Chaumont describes a 6-foot-3, 224-pound right wing who, per scouts, hits like a train.

He's a draft prospect, so the profile is the story, not a stat line. A big, physical winger is a clear archetype to add.

That size fills a need, too. Montreal's skilled young core has leaned small and fast, so a heavy winger brings something different to the pipeline.

And the Canadiens can draft for the future from a position of strength. They finished 6th overall under Martin St-Louis, a rising team that doesn't have to rush anyone.

Chaumont had the pick.

Why a power winger fits the Canadiens' pipeline

Think about the projection. A 224-pound right shot who plays heavy is the kind of player who can eventually protect skill and win battles along the wall.

It complements what's already there. Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield drive the offense with finesse, and adding size on the wing rounds out the developmental group.

Temper the timeline, though. A late first-round winger is usually a multi-year project, not a quick call-up, and the eye-test traits still have to translate to pro hockey.

The position helps the bet. Right-shot wingers with that frame are valuable, and Kent Hughes adding one to the system is sound long-term planning.

Here's my read: this is a swing on a power profile, and I like it for a team that can be patient. Montreal has the high-end skill already, so betting a late first on size and physicality is the right kind of risk.

So the Habs add a different flavor to a deep young group.

How Pugachyov's game rounds out over the next few years is the question. The traits are loud. The development is just beginning.
