Alex Ovechkin, with Spencer Carbery still behind the Capitals bench, just gave Washington a clearer offseason path.
That is the real development here. Not a final decision on retirement. Not a signed deal. A much sharper sense of what his next contract would look like if he comes back.
Chris Patrick said he already has a good understanding of Ovechkin's contract range if the captain decides to play another season. That matters because it lets Washington build the rest of its summer with real numbers in mind.
That is a big change from pure guesswork. Ovechkin has stayed quiet in public, but the Capitals are no longer operating blind on the money side of this file.
And this is still a real file. Ovechkin turns 41 in September, yet he played all 82 games last season and still led Washington with 32 goals.
“From my conversations with Alex before he left, I think I had an understanding of if he does come back, what's he looking at contract-wise.”
- Chris Patrick
The ice time dropped to 17:27 per game, the lowest of his career, but the finishing touch did not disappear. For a club still built around his presence, that keeps the door wide open.
Washington also has room to work. As of Saturday, the club had 14.325 million in available cap space, which gives Patrick enough breathing room to plan for Ovechkin and still look elsewhere.
“Alex, as you guys all know, is a really competitive person, and he wants to win. He definitely wanted to see what we did here in this offseason, help inform his decisions.”

A huge Alex Ovechkin update just changed everything for the Capitals
That is the strongest angle here. Ovechkin already said in April that team direction would be the biggest factor if he returned. He wanted to see a group that could make the playoffs and fight for the Cup.
Washington answered that challenge fast. The Capitals added Jordan Kyrou on Tuesday, then brought in Alex Tuch in a sign-and-trade on Wednesday.
That is not subtle roster work. That is a front office showing its captain that the club is serious about helping him chase something meaningful if he decides not to walk away yet.
“Obviously, if I want to come back, it has to be a decision. First of all, we're going to make playoffs, and we have to fight for a Cup.”
- Alex Ovechkin
Patrick made that part plain too. He said Ovechkin wanted to see what the team would do this offseason, and those moves now give him more information to make his choice.
There is even a way to get creative on the contract. Because of Ovechkin's age, Washington could use performance bonuses and push any overage into 2027-28, when the cap is projected to jump hard.
So this story is not about panic anymore. It is about alignment. The Capitals know the contract zone, they have already upgraded the wing, and Carbery has spoken with a star who sounds engaged and is watching every move.
Now the last piece is simple. Alex Ovechkin has to decide whether this roster is good enough to give him one more year that feels worth it.
Should Alex Ovechkin come back for one more season with this Capitals roster?
