The Florida Panthers just blew up their crease. Jacob Markstrom is heading to the New Jersey Devils.

Pierre LeBrun confirmed the full trade Tuesday afternoon. Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves go to New Jersey.

In return, the Panthers get Markstrom and forward Angus Crookshank.

It's a goalie-for-bodies deal that reshapes both rosters heading into the offseason.

Markstrom posted a 15-19 record with a .883 save percentage and one shutout in 44 games for New Jersey this year. He's 36 and still under contract at a $6,000,000 cap hit.

That's a steep price for a goalie coming off a save percentage that ranks closer to backup territory than starter numbers.

Why Florida moved two top-six forwards for a 36-year-old netminder

Rodrigues put up 31 points in 69 games for Florida this season, going minus-16 along the way. Boqvist chipped in 13 points over 73 games.

Neither was thriving in Paul Maurice's lineup. Both were buried deep in Florida's bottom six without much offensive traction.

Crookshank, the other piece heading to Florida, appeared in just 8 games for New Jersey, scoring once.

This is a low-risk swing for the Panthers if Sergei Bobrovsky needs relief next season. Bobrovsky himself posted a brutal .876 save percentage across 52 games, so the need for competent goaltending depth is real.

Think of it like trading two role players for an insurance policy you're not sure you'll need.

Florida finished 40-38-4 this year, sitting 25th overall with a -25 goal differential. New Jersey wrapped up at 42-37-3, 21st overall, going minus-24.

Neither club had a season worth bragging about. Both finished with losing records against the puck.

New Jersey clearly wanted scoring depth over aging goaltending. Florida went the opposite direction.

Florida actually went 1-2 against New Jersey in head-to-head matchups this season, including a 1-5 loss back on March 3.

Bill Zito betting on a 36-year-old goalie coming off a down year is the kind of move that either ages gracefully or blows up fast. There's no in-between with goaltending trades like this one.

What happens to Florida's crease depth chart now is the real question nobody's answering yet.
