Pavel Mintyukov just got paid, and Joel Quenneville now has one less summer problem on Anaheim's blue line.

Frank Seravalli reported Sunday that Mintyukov's new deal in Anaheim comes in at 5 years and $7.2 million AAV, with a $3 million signing bonus in Year 1.

That number tells you exactly where this went.

The Ducks weren't interested in dragging this out while the rest of the league circled a young left-shot defenseman with real top-four value.

And the timing matters even more because Anaheim is already dealing with the fallout from the Leo Carlsson offer-sheet pressure that hit this roster days ago.

Multiple reports tied Carlsson to a 5-year, $90 million offer sheet from Philadelphia.

That changes the mood in a front office fast. Once one young core piece gets targeted, the next negotiation stops feeling routine.

Mintyukov was an obvious candidate. He put up 8 goals and 22 points in 73 games last season, and he did it while handling regular blue-line minutes on a Ducks team that pushed into the playoffs.

The Ducks finished 43-33-6 with 92 points in 2025-26, so this isn't a rebuilding club tossing money around for optics. This is a playoff team trying to keep its core from getting picked apart.

Anaheim saw the danger and moved

That's why this deal feels less like a luxury and more like a lock-the-door move. Pat Verbeek didn't need another waiting game while rival teams looked for a second swing at Anaheim's roster.

Carlsson's situation made that impossible to ignore. He had 67 points in 70 regular-season games, then added 11 points in 12 playoff games, which is exactly why Anaheim couldn't act casual about Mintyukov.

Quenneville also needs this defense group settled before camp. Mintyukov is 22, skates well enough to escape pressure, and already looks like a piece that can stay on a second pair and still climb from there.

The first-year bonus is another tell. Anaheim didn't just match the market mood here; they leaned into a structure that helps get the deal done before this turned into a bigger fight.

Now the pressure shifts back to the Carlsson file. But at least one major Ducks negotiation is off the board, and that matters for a club that just learned how fast offer-sheet season can get ugly.

Anaheim took the hint. They weren't taking any chances with Pavel Mintyukov.
