William Villeneuve just got his answer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it comes with a two-year, $875,000 cap hit.
The deal landed Wednesday night, first confirmed by PuckPedia, locking up the restricted free agent defenseman before he hit the open market.
The structure tells you exactly how Toronto values him right now. Year one pays $850,000 at the NHL level, with $400,000 if he's in the minors.
Year two bumps the NHL salary to $900,000, keeps the same $400,000 minor league number, and adds a $500,000 guarantee.
Villeneuve played three games with the big club this season. No goals, no assists, a plus-1 rating in what amounted to a cup of coffee.
Call it what it is. Cheap insurance on a fourth-round pick, not a headline signing anyone in the locker room is talking about.
The timing says plenty on its own. Toronto just finished 32-36-14, good for 28th overall, closing the year on a seven-game skid.

Villeneuve isn't walking into a settled lineup. He's fighting for a job on a blue line that clearly needs bodies who can actually move pucks.
Think of it like renewing the lease on an apartment you're not sure you'll live in much longer. Cheap enough that nobody's tied down if it doesn't work out.
Dave Gagner negotiated the extension on Villeneuve's behalf, and the RFA tag meant Toronto never had to overpay for term or dollars here.
So does a $500,000 guarantee in year two mean the organization actually believes in him, or is it just the going rate for keeping a prospect from testing free agency?
Villeneuve doesn't hit unrestricted free agency until 2029, which buys Toronto four more years of control over a 24-year-old who's shown flashes but not results at the NHL level.

Whether he ever turns those flashes into a real role is the question nobody in that front office can answer yet. Training camp will start doing that work soon enough.
