Matt Poitras is on Edmonton's trade radar, and Mike Babcock could end up with a young forward option if Stan Bowman makes one more move.

The Oilers have already spent much of their summer tightening up the blue line and crease. That leaves the front office looking at a different need now: forward depth with some upside.

That's where Poitras enters the picture.

The Bruins center has been identified as a possible target for Edmonton, which is still searching for a younger, cheaper addition up front instead of diving into a bigger veteran swing.

Poitras still carries intrigue because the offensive skill never fully disappeared. He put up 95 points in 63 games with the Guelph Storm after being drafted, which is why he was viewed as a strong prospect in the first place.

But his path in Boston has stalled, and that's the opening Edmonton may be watching.

Why Poitras fits Edmonton's timing

After the trade deadline last season, Poitras did not appear in a single game for Boston. That says plenty about where he stood on the Bruins' depth chart.

The projected lineup picture for 2026-27 doesn't make his road any easier either. If he's still on the outside looking in, the Oilers have reason to poke around.

This is the kind of bet that makes sense for Edmonton. Poitras produced 85 points over his last 109 AHL games with Providence, so there's still a real player here even if he hasn't locked down a full-time NHL role.

That matters for an Oilers team that could use more youth in the forward group. Edmonton's prospect pool was recently ranked 30th in the league, so adding a player like Poitras would at least give the organization another young piece to work with.

The price is part of the appeal too. The belief is that Edmonton could get into the conversation with some mix of draft picks and fringe roster pieces, with Spencer Stastney mentioned as one possible trade chip.

There's also a cap angle here. Edmonton still has room to breathe, and Allan Mitchell's description of targeting a younger forward as the “smart play” lines up with a patient approach.

Instead of burning every dollar right now, Bowman could add Poitras, keep flexibility for later, and see whether a fresh start finally gets the player moving again.
