Zach Hyman has backed head coach Mike Babcock, giving the Edmonton Oilers' controversial hire a strong public endorsement.

The Oilers faced immediate backlash after choosing Babcock to lead their bench. His previous NHL stops created questions about whether Edmonton was taking an unnecessary risk.

But Hyman, who played for Babcock with the Toronto Maple Leafs, made it clear the organization didn't rush into its decision.

“I think as an organization we all wanted to find the right person for the job,” revealed Hyman.

The forward also supported Edmonton's decision to bring DJ Smith onto Babcock's staff as an associate coach.

“Bringing in DJ as well really cements our coaching staff as one of the best in the league,” said Hyman.

Hyman says Oilers players support Babcock

Hyman's history with both coaches gives his comments extra weight. He worked under Babcock and Smith in Toronto and came away with positive impressions of each man.

Still, Babcock's past made the league's review process an important part of Edmonton's decision. Hyman said the involvement of both the NHL and NHLPA mattered.

“It was really important that the NHL and the NHLPA did the process that they needed to do,” admitted Hyman.

Hyman also indicated that the conversation extended beyond his own experience. Players regularly exchange information around the league, especially when a major coaching hire affects a locker room.

“As players you talk to other players and you get a sense for things around the league... I think as players we were all comfortable with Babs and what he brought,” said Hyman. “It's something that's gonna be really good for our group, he's somebody who we need and somebody who can take us to the next level.”

That's a firm statement from one of Edmonton's most prominent forwards. Hyman isn't simply accepting the hire; he believes Babcock can push the Oilers forward.

The pressure now shifts to Babcock. Edmonton's core has offered its support, but the new head coach must prove that trust was deserved once the season begins.
