Matvei Michkov delivered a blunt summer revelation that should grab Rick Tocchet's attention before the Philadelphia Flyers open training camp.
The 21-year-old forward revealed he effectively skipped his vacation to prepare for his third NHL season. His reasoning was direct: “There was no vacation at all.”
Michkov knows the coming season carries added pressure. Philadelphia expects its gifted winger to produce consistently, earn Tocchet's trust and become a reliable top-six threat.
That urgency shaped his entire offseason. The Flyers sent a coach to Russia for two weeks, putting Michkov through a demanding program built around three training sessions per day.
His mornings began in the gym with strength work. He then moved to the ice before completing another conditioning session later in the evening.
Michkov didn't complain about the workload. He welcomed it, saying, “I need to play well,” while acknowledging that better preparation was necessary after an uneven season.

The winger also trained in Perm, Moscow and St. Petersburg. He attended Artemi Panarin's camp, where he focused on details ranging from passing and shooting to overall puck control.
Recovery became another major part of his routine. Michkov paid closer attention to nutrition and keeping his body ready for the volume of work required throughout an NHL schedule.
He even tested a Whoop band, but quickly abandoned it after seeing a 20 percent recovery reading. The device didn't last, though his commitment to improved habits clearly did.
Michkov plans to return to Philadelphia in early August, well before the Flyers begin camp. “My training in Russia is still ongoing,” he explained while discussing his departure timeline.
He hasn't held a serious offseason conversation with Tocchet yet. Asked about that relationship, Michkov gave another short response: “No talks yet.”
That conversation will come soon enough. And when Michkov steps back into the Flyers' locker room, Tocchet won't need to question whether his young winger treated this summer casually.
Michkov's revelation raises expectations. He didn't spend the offseason relaxing-he spent it preparing to force a bigger role, stronger production and a different result.
