Steve Yzerman's reported replacement has been identified, and it's a blockbuster name

Scott White is already a name to watch in the Red Wings front office search, and the list keeps growing by the day.

Jeff Marek dropped the name Monday night, and it landed with weight around the league.

White currently works in the Dallas Stars front office, under general manager Jim Nill, who has run that operation since 2013.

Dallas also brought in Glen Gulutzan behind the bench last July, part of a front office that keeps getting mentioned around the league this summer.

Marek's read was blunt. He expects White to get a call from Detroit, but he expects him to get calls from everybody else too.

That's the kind of reputation that builds quietly, then shows up everywhere at once.

Steve Yzerman has run Detroit's front office since 2019, and Todd McLellan has coached the bench there since December 2024.

The Red Wings closed this season 41-31-10 for 92 points, a minus-17 goal differential, and dropped their final three games, including a 1-8 loss at Florida.

Marek says White will be a hot name well beyond Detroit

Dallas finished 50-20-12, ranked third overall in the league with a plus-52 goal differential and a five-game win streak to close the year.

Numbers like that get noticed. And front offices that produce them get raided.

Is it any surprise a club coming off a three-game skid wants a piece of that structure walking through the door?

Here's the thing nobody's saying out loud. If everyone wants White, Detroit isn't just competing with itself for a hire, it's competing with the whole league for a window.

Marek's framing matters here too. He didn't call White a Detroit lock. He called him a name that makes sense everywhere, which is a very different thing.

So the question isn't whether Detroit gets an interview. It's whether they get an answer before somebody else does.
