The Sabres created a major opening by trading Alex Tuch to Washington after his 33-goal season. Replacing that finishing ability now sits high on their offseason list.
Tarasenko still produced 23 goals and 47 points in 75 games with Minnesota last season. He added 5 points across 11 playoff appearances.
At 34, he's no longer expected to drive a first line or carry heavy defensive assignments. His value comes from finding open ice and finishing chances created by skilled teammates.
Buffalo could use him on the second or third line, give him offensive-zone starts and place his shot on the power play.

A 1-year deal between $2,750,000 and $3,500,000 would leave the Sabres some room for injuries and recalls. Matching his previous $4,750,000 cap hit would create a much tighter situation.
Edmonton, Montreal and Ottawa have also been mentioned as possible destinations. Minnesota remains familiar, though its decision not to re-sign him has kept the winger available into August.
Tarasenko may have expected more money or term when free agency opened. The quiet market suggests teams still respect his shot but won't overlook his age and defensive limitations.
Buffalo shouldn't view him as a direct Tuch replacement. The Sabres would be buying short-term scoring support without surrendering a draft pick or prospect.
At the right number, Tarasenko could become one of the summer's better value signings. Buffalo needs goals, he needs a clear opportunity, and the market is pushing both sides toward compromise.
