Steve Yzerman is out as Red Wings GM, and Detroit is hiring a search firm to help find his successor.

This is one of the biggest front-office stories of the summer, and it's happening quietly, on a Wednesday, with no press conference.

Yzerman ran the Red Wings front office from April of 2019 until last month, when he shifted into a senior advisor role.

Owner Christopher Ilitch is now working with an outside firm to find someone new. And here's the twist. They're reportedly looking for an analytics and data-driven GM.

That's a real shift for an organization that's leaned heavily on old-school scouting instincts for years.

Shawn Horcoff has been handling the day-to-day GM duties since the transition. But that authority reportedly does not extend to trades.

So Detroit is currently a team without full front-office control, heading into an off-season that already needed direction.

Why the timing makes this hire even tougher

The Red Wings just wrapped a rough season. They finished 41-31-10 with 92 points, ranked 16th overall and sixth in the Atlantic Division.

Detroit closed the year on a three-game skid, going 2-6-2 over its final ten games. The finale was ugly, an 8-1 loss on the road to Florida.

A goal differential of -17 tells you this wasn't a team that was one piece away. It needed real structural change, and now it's making that change without a GM in full command.

Todd McLellan remains behind the bench, hired back in December of 2024. He's coaching for a front office that's currently in limbo, waiting on hires that will shape his roster.

Bringing in an analytics-first executive is a bet that data can fix what scouting missed. That's a fair bet in today's NHL, but it's also a gamble on someone who doesn't yet exist.

Hiring a search firm signals patience. It also signals Ilitch isn't in a rush to promote from within, and that alone should worry anyone hoping Horcoff gets the job on a permanent basis.

Detroit fans have waited years for direction. Now they're watching a search committee instead of a front office, and nobody's said when that changes.
