Max Domi enters Jim Hiller's first season behind Toronto's bench with his health, not his lineup spot, now the biggest question.
Domi underwent back surgery after playing through an injury last season, but the procedure reportedly produced complications far beyond a standard offseason recovery.
The most alarming detail came after the operation. Domi was reportedly unable to walk in the days that followed, creating serious concern inside the Maple Leafs organization.
“Something went terribly wrong with the surgery,” Steve Simmons wrote when the first details of Domi's situation surfaced.
The exact nature of the complication has not been made public. Domi reportedly selected his own surgeon rather than using the physician Toronto had in mind for the procedure.
There has since been an encouraging development: Domi can walk again without issue. That doesn't mean the Maple Leafs have a clear timetable for his return to hockey activities.

Domi's status will be evaluated around the start of training camp, and there remains real uncertainty about whether he'll be available during the 2026-27 season.
“His status remains in doubt for the coming season,” Simmons wrote, leaving Toronto with a roster question that could stretch beyond camp.
For Hiller, the priority is clear. There's little reason to push Domi back into the lineup until medical clearance and his conditioning allow for a controlled return.
Toronto has reshaped its sports performance department, and that group will have a major role once Domi is cleared to begin increasing his workload.
The Maple Leafs also added forward depth during the offseason, giving Hiller more flexibility if Domi can't open the year in the bottom six.
That depth buys Toronto time. It doesn't erase the uncertainty surrounding a player whose recovery took such an unexpected turn after surgery.
Training camp should provide the next meaningful update. Until then, Domi's ability to return to NHL action remains one of Toronto's biggest unanswered questions.
