Evgeny Kuznetsov has made his call, closing the NHL door for now after another summer that linked him back to Spencer Carbery's league.
The 34-year-old center has signed a one-year contract with Sibir Novosibirsk for the 2026-27 KHL season, officially ending the possibility of an NHL comeback this fall.
That decision carries weight because Kuznetsov's future had remained open throughout the offseason. Instead of waiting deeper into the summer for an NHL opportunity, he committed to another season in Russia.
Sibir becomes his fourth KHL club since the start of the 2024-25 season. He previously spent time with SKA St. Petersburg, Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Salavat Yulaev.
Kuznetsov produced 27 points, including 7 goals and 20 assists, across 34 regular-season KHL games last season. He followed that with 2 points in 7 playoff appearances.
The bigger story is where this leaves his NHL career. Kuznetsov hasn't played in the league since 2023-24, when his final season was split between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes.
Kuznetsov chooses certainty over an NHL comeback
The former Capitals center had spent part of the summer in the Washington area, keeping the possibility of another North American chapter alive. Instead, his next puck drop will come with Sibir.
His NHL résumé remains substantial. Kuznetsov appeared in 743 regular-season games with Washington and Carolina, recording 575 points before leaving the league in 2024.
For teams that may have viewed him as a late-summer depth option down the middle, that possibility is now gone. There will be no camp invitation, short-term contract or last-minute roster push this year.
And for Kuznetsov, the move removes weeks of speculation. He has a team, a contract and a defined role heading into another KHL season.
The decision doesn't guarantee his NHL days are finished for good. A one-year agreement leaves the door technically available again next summer.
But for 2026-27, Kuznetsov has answered the question himself. The comeback discussion can stop. He's staying in the KHL.
