Dylan Larkin's trade request now lands in Todd McLellan's room with Detroit's next GM set to inherit a decision that can reshape the franchise.
The twist isn't a new trade partner. Detroit's front-office change has altered who will ultimately decide whether the captain stays or gets moved.
That creates an opening for a fresh management voice to revisit the relationship. Instead of automatically honoring Larkin's request, the next GM could try to sell him on a different direction.
Larkin remains a major piece on the ice. He scored 34 goals and finished with 67 points across 74 games last season.

It also puts pressure on the organization to present something stronger than patience. Larkin would need to hear a believable plan for turning the Red Wings into a team capable of moving forward while he's still in his prime.
Steve Yzerman's reduced role changes the dynamics around that pitch. Detroit's next decision-maker is expected to have the freedom to establish a new direction rather than simply continue the previous structure.
McLellan has plenty at stake too. Losing his top center would immediately alter Detroit's top six, power play and matchup deployment before another season begins.
Keeping Larkin without repairing the relationship carries its own risk. A captain who still wants out would leave the same question hanging over the locker room once camp opens.
