Pettersson carries an $11,600,000 cap hit, currently the 8th-highest among NHL players. That number follows him into every trade conversation.

The Canucks also can't manufacture a strong market by wanting a trade. Rival clubs know Vancouver would prefer a summer resolution, giving them little incentive to overpay.
Pettersson faces his own uncomfortable reality if nothing happens. He could report to camp knowing his organization spent the offseason examining ways to move forward without him.
That creates pressure on Malhotra before his first regular-season puck drop. A trade storyline involving one of the roster's biggest names can follow every line combination and every media availability.
Keeping Pettersson still has value if the offers remain weak. A strong start could improve Vancouver's lineup while giving interested clubs a different version of the player to evaluate.
But waiting carries risk too. If the fit remains awkward and his play doesn't change the conversation, the Canucks could arrive at the same trade problem months later.
Drance's update makes Vancouver's preferred outcome much clearer. The Canucks would like to solve this before the season rather than drag it through another year.
Now comes the difficult part. Wanting to move Elias Pettersson is one decision. Finding a team willing to make the contract, return and roster fit work is the one that determines whether he actually leaves.
