Connor Hellebuyck's trade request has put Scott Arniel's Winnipeg Jets under pressure, and a surprise Pacific contender has entered the conversation.

Hockey insider Anthony Di Marco has identified the San Jose Sharks as a sleeper team worth watching if Winnipeg moves its star goaltender.

Di Marco made clear he hasn't heard that San Jose is actively involved. His point is about fit, and the potential impact would be enormous.

“One dark horse team for Connor Hellebuyck: the San Jose Sharks,” Di Marco wrote.

He followed with the part that makes the idea especially interesting: “I haven't heard them as a landing spot but, on paper, it would make sense.”

San Jose already has Yaroslav Askarov in the crease, but Di Marco openly questioned his previous season while arguing Hellebuyck could dramatically change the Sharks' standing in the Pacific.

San Jose suddenly makes sense for Hellebuyck

That's what makes this more than another random destination thrown into the trade conversation. Acquiring Hellebuyck would immediately change how head coach Ryan Warsofsky could manage his lineup.

Instead of asking Askarov to carry the position, San Jose could place an established starter ahead of him and control the younger goaltender's workload.

There's also a bigger organizational question for general manager Mike Grier. A Hellebuyck pursuit would represent an aggressive move toward winning now rather than simply allowing the roster to develop.

For Winnipeg, San Jose would become interesting because the Sharks could approach talks from a completely different position than an established contender desperate for one final piece.

And that's where Di Marco's suggestion carries weight. He isn't reporting negotiations between the teams. He's identifying a fit that could become much harder to ignore if Hellebuyck's market expands.

The Sharks would still have to decide how far they're willing to push for a goaltender while Askarov remains part of their plans.

But if San Jose believes Hellebuyck can accelerate its climb in the Pacific, one of the quieter teams in the conversation could suddenly become one of the most fascinating.
