Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly being linked to free agent winger Patrik Laine.
Bruce Garrioch reported this week that the Leafs, Panthers, Stars and Lightning all have interest in Laine, per the Ottawa Citizen.
Toronto isn't just one of four names floating around. It's arguably the franchise with the clearest use for him.
Matthews played just 60 games last season, still managing 27 goals and 53 points despite missing real time in the lineup.
William Nylander stayed healthy and put up 79 points in 65 games, the kind of number that papers over problems elsewhere.
Beyond those two, though, the wing depth gets thin fast. Matthew Knies had 66 points but also finished at minus-30.
Jack Roslovic quietly scored 21 goals in 69 games on a $1.5 million deal. That's the level of secondary scoring Toronto actually needs more of.
Where a low-risk Laine deal could actually slot in
Max Domi is currently day-to-day with a back injury, questionable for the start of the season, which only adds urgency to the wing conversation.
Toronto finished 32-36-14 last season, 28th overall, and closed the year on a seven-game losing streak. Scoring depth was part of that story.

New head coach Jim Hiller inherits a roster that can't simply run everything through Matthews and Nylander every night.
That's exactly why a reported interest in a low-cost, incentive-laden Laine deal makes sense on paper for Toronto specifically.
He wouldn't need to be handed top-line minutes. He'd need to win a bottom-six or middle-six job and prove his shot still translates.
Compare that to John Tavares, still producing 71 points in 82 games at 35, or Roslovic on his bargain deal, and the ceiling for a depth add becomes clear.
Toronto's cap situation isn't loose, with Matthews at $13.25 million and Nylander at $11.5 million anchoring the books.
That's precisely why a contract built around performance bonuses instead of guaranteed money fits the moment for a team like this.
Nothing here is signed, and nothing about Laine's own recent stat line comes from anywhere but rumor at this stage.
But if Toronto is serious about that interest, the fit isn't hard to see. The Leafs have real space in their bottom nine, and they know it.
