Connor Hellebuyck's trade request has a new layer, and it reportedly traces back to the Olympics.
Insider David Pagnotta addressed the connection on The Sheet, and his answer was more nuanced than a simple yes or no.
"Winning gold and the fan reaction, I don't think it's been that impactful on Hellebuyck as some of the other guys," Pagnotta said.
"But I think it did play a bit of a factor," he added.
Hellebuyck was stellar for the United States at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, part of the same gold-medal group as Auston Matthews.
Several of those American teammates have already left Canadian teams this offseason, including Matthew Tkachuk years ago and his brother Brady just last week.
Pagnotta made a point of separating Hellebuyck from that pattern, at least partially.

"Again, he really did enjoy his time with the Jets," Pagnotta said, pushing back on the idea that Winnipeg was ever the actual problem.
That's a meaningfully different story than a player who simply wants out of a market he never liked.
Hellebuyck himself said as much back in April, admitting he made Winnipeg his home even while questioning whether other players felt the same way.
Winnipeg missed the playoffs last season for the first time in four years, finishing 35-35-12 and 26th overall in the league.
That kind of season, layered on top of even a small Olympic-fueled factor, is enough to push a trade request without erasing genuine affection for the place.
Does liking a city still matter if a player believes the roster around him can't get where it needs to go?
It's the hockey equivalent of loving your apartment but still moving because the building keeps failing inspection.
My take: this version of the story is actually worse for Winnipeg, not better. Losing a guy who liked it there says more about the roster than the market.
Camp is close, and the emotional layer to this saga is turning out to be more complicated than either side wanting a clean break.
