Oilers make a surprise move, cutting four players before camp

The Edmonton Oilers released forward Weston Cameron from his Amateur Tryout on Tuesday, one of three players cut loose by the team.

Forwards Olli Wahlroos and defenseman Kyle Heger were also released from their ATO deals, according to the team's own announcement.

None of the three will remain in Oilers camp. That's how tryouts work. You either play your way onto the radar or you get a plane ticket home.

Goaltender Ryan Cameron didn't get released. He got reassigned, sent back to his junior club, the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL.

That's a notable distinction. A release ends the conversation. A reassignment usually means the door stays open.

Edmonton's front office, run by general manager Stan Bowman, is doing what teams do every September: separating roster hopefuls from camp bodies before games start to matter.

The Oilers are coming off a 41-30-11 season, so there's no desperation here. This is standard roster maintenance, not a crisis move.

Why Ryan Cameron's reassignment matters more than the cuts

Here's the thing about ATO releases. They rarely make headlines because the players involved were never expected to stick.

Weston Cameron, Wahlroos and Heger came into Oilers camp on tryout terms, no contract, no guarantee, just an invitation to show something.

They didn't show enough. Or maybe they showed exactly what Edmonton already knew and the numbers game simply won.

Ryan Cameron is the more interesting name in this release. Sending a goalie back to junior instead of cutting him outright signals the organization still sees value there.

Sioux Falls gets its goaltender back for the USHL season, and Edmonton keeps a relationship alive it clearly isn't ready to close.

None of these four names will factor into Edmonton's opening night roster. But how the Oilers handle the next wave of camp cuts, especially among players on standard contracts, will say a lot more about where this roster actually stands.
