Brian Hayes got a shot in on Mitch Marner during Friday's edition of Overdrive, and the Maple Leafs conversation around it deserves a closer look.
The panel was debating Gavin McKenna, the 18 year old taken first overall in the 2026 draft, and the call to keep him out of the Prospect Challenge.
Hayes described rookie camp as a rite of passage. He added that Marner might be upset if he found out the kid got to skip it.
Jeff O'Neill and Jamie McLennan went back and forth on whether letting a prospect bypass the thing counts as pampering.
Fine. It is a joke on a morning show and nobody needs a formal apology.

But the timing lands strangely. The player on the receiving end of that jab just finished 22 playoff dates and was still skating in the middle of June.
He piled up 29 points across that run at plus-11, with four shorthanded assists tucked in for good measure.

The regular season was not shabby either. Eighty points in 81 games on a $12 million ticket, with a plus-17 rating behind it.
Vegas went 39-26-17 and took the Pacific. Carolina finally closed them out in six, with the last one going 3-0 on June 14.
Now look at the club doing the needling. Toronto went 32-36-14 and ranked 28th in the league.
The finish was grim. Seven consecutive losses to wrap it up, the last a 3-1 night in Ottawa on April 15.

They surrendered 299 goals, which works out to 3.6 against every single night. You cannot coach around that.
Auston Matthews managed 53 points in 60 games on a $13.25 million cap hit. William Nylander put up 79 and still finished at -14.
Matthew Knies went minus-30. John Tavares scored 31 times at 35 years old and somehow landed at -28.
So a broadcast in that market wants to litigate who is thin skinned?
Poking at a player's sensitivity from a city that finished 28th is like a guy with a flat tire honking at traffic.
Here is what actually matters. McKenna is walking into a room where cameras follow him around the rink and the expectations arrive before he does.
Jim Hiller took over behind that bench in June with almost nothing settled. A rookie forward is not the piece that repairs a minus-46 goal differential.
The rite of passage talk will fade by October.
What lingers is the question nobody on that broadcast bothered to ask. Which of these two organizations actually needs the lesson right now?
