"I've really liked what he's done this summer," Matthews said.
That's not a dramatic proclamation. It's a simple sentence from a player who was clearly watching closely before deciding to say anything at all.
Matthews still carries a $13,250,000 cap hit, the richest deal on Toronto's books, and his buy-in matters more than any single roster move Chayka made this summer.
Chayka appears to have won Matthews over through actions rather than promises, letting a full offseason of roster building speak for itself instead of leaning on a big introductory speech.
That's arguably the harder way to earn a captain's trust, and it looks like it worked without Chayka ever needing the splashy public moment to prove it.
Whether that quiet buy-in translates into results once the season starts is still the only thing left to prove, for both the GM and his captain.
