Footage of Matthew Mayich's ASU workout that led to collapse surfaces to the public amid grim outlook

Matthew Mayich remains hospitalized after the August 20 workout held under Arizona State head coach Greg Powers, with his condition described as dire.

The 21-year-old defenseman has been incapacitated since collapsing during the outdoor team session in Tempe. Recent reporting has described Mayich as being on life support.

Earlier reports described Mayich as being in a coma, though family attorney Robert Carey later said that description was not medically accurate and called his condition irreversible.

Now, footage from the August 20 workout has emerged, putting images to an incident that has shaken the hockey world and left Mayich's family facing an unimaginable situation.

The video shows players going through demanding outdoor exercises as Timothy Ziesel, a former Green Beret involved in the team-building session, directs the group.

Players can be seen down on the field performing bodyweight work and moving through the session under the Arizona sun, giving a stark visual context to what followed.

Mayich eventually struggled during a relay involving a medicine ball, dropped the ball and fell before trying to rise and going back to his knees, according to Arizona State's review.

The workout ran between roughly 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Temperatures during that period ranged from 86°F to 89°F, with relative humidity between 46% and 51%.

Mayich's family has said he suffered exertional heat stroke that reduced oxygen flow to his brain. His parents have stressed that the collapse was not related to a heart condition.

The university's review also found that the hockey staff had not submitted a plan of the training activities to Arizona State's strength and conditioning coaches before the session.

Mayich had arrived in Tempe from Canada on August 12, only eight days before the workout. He had passed a physical and completed three voluntary workouts before August 20.

The St. Louis Blues selected Mayich 170th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. He transferred to Arizona State after playing his freshman college season at Clarkson.

For Mayich's family and teammates, hockey has become secondary. The newly released footage brings renewed attention to the morning that changed the 21-year-old's life and the unanswered questions surrounding how it unfolded.
