Brad Marchand left Paul Maurice and the Panthers waiting on answers after a worrying lower-body injury scare.

There was no firm update immediately afterward. Maurice said Marchand will be looked at Thursday, leaving Florida with an uncomfortable wait surrounding one of its most important forwards.

That uncertainty took on another layer when Dr. Harjas Grewal, a physician who regularly comments on NHL injuries, examined the mechanism of the play publicly.

Grewal raised concern about a possible MCL injury. He also noted that the same mechanism can produce a high ankle sprain, while describing the likelihood of an ACL injury as low.

The important distinction is that Grewal wasn't diagnosing Marchand. He was evaluating what the sequence could mean based on what was visible, and the possibilities he raised weren't minor ones.

Marchand's leg appeared to get caught as the play closed around him, and he reached toward his knee afterward.

Marchand's Thursday evaluation now carries real weight

Grewal wrote that recovery time depends on severity, but said a Grade 2 injury can often mean 4-6 weeks away. That possibility alone puts far more attention on Thursday's examination.

Florida hasn't announced that Marchand has an MCL injury, a high ankle sprain or any specific diagnosis. Until the Panthers provide that information, those remain medical possibilities raised from the video.

Still, the timing couldn't be brushed aside. Losing Marchand for any meaningful stretch would force Maurice to rethink his top-six combinations and redistribute important offensive minutes.

The Panthers did receive better news elsewhere. Maurice said Eetu Luostarinen, who finished the game, is fine, removing another potential injury concern from the immediate picture.

That leaves Marchand as the name everyone will be watching. A routine evaluation could calm the situation quickly, but Grewal's assessment has made the range of possible outcomes much harder to ignore.

For now, Florida's next update matters more than the initial scare itself. Thursday should reveal whether this was simply an ugly-looking sequence or the start of a much more serious absence.
