A fan trade idea sends Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz to the Rangers, but he could make sense in plenty of other cities too.
The Hockey Fan's framework has Toronto sending Stolarz and its 2027 second-round pick to New York for Braden Schneider and Jacob Battaglia.
The pitch has the young defenseman helping fill the hole left by Chris Tanev's injury, while the Rangers get a backup for Dylan Garand.
New York still says no to moving Schneider for that. Stolarz himself, though, is exactly the kind of fairly priced backup contenders hunt for in October.
A dependable backup is like a good spare key. Nobody thinks about it until the day they really need it.
Stolarz sits at .875 on a $3,750,000 cap hit.
Schneider has a +3 rating on a $5,500,000 cap hit, while Spencer Martin has also appeared once in the Rangers' crease.
Trade idea here, mostly a framework:
To NYR:
Anthony Stolarz
Toronto's 2027 2nd
To TOR
Brandon Schneider
Jacob Battaglia
Toronto gets a younger, defensive minded D to fill in for Tanev, along with a C prospect
NYR get a 2nd and a good backup to play alongside Garand

Anthony Stolarz trade proposal: Six potential destinations for Maple Leafs goalie
Colorado's Mackenzie Blackwood sits at .879 on a $5,250,000 cap hit.
Scott Wedgewood has appeared only twice, so Chris MacFarland might want another reliable option.
Edmonton's Tristan Jarry sits at .837 on a $5,375,000 cap hit.
Swapping him for Stolarz would save Stan Bowman $1,625,000 and likely steady the backup spot.
Montreal's Jakub Dobes sits at .842, and Samuel Montembeault is out until at least Oct 20.
Jacob Fowler has been steadier at .906, but he's 21 and still finding his way.
Kent Hughes wants a big fish, but a steady goalie might be the smarter catch.
Winnipeg's Clay Stevenson sits at .872 while the Connor Hellebuyck standoff drags on.
Kevin Cheveldayoff could use Stolarz as a bridge while he sorts out the bigger problem.
Ottawa's Linus Ullmark sits at .949, but backup Samuel Ersson is at .829.
Steve Staios has a contender's record at 6-2-0 and a backup problem to match.
Does Toronto even want to move him with Sergei Bobrovsky sitting at .896?
The Rangers framework is one option. With this many teams thin in the crease, Stolarz might have more suitors than anyone expected.
Should the Maple Leafs trade Anthony Stolarz?
