The Edmonton Oilers have acquired D Mattias Ekholm from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2023 1st round pick, D Tyson Barrie, F Reid Schaeffer and a 2024 4th round pick.
Oilers return to Nashville: 2023 1st RD pick, Tyson Barrie, Reid Schaefer and 4th RD pick— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 28, 2023
The ask for Ekholm was two 1st rounders, and Schaeffer was selected with the last pick of the 1st round in 2022, so technically he qualifies. Nashville also retained 4% of Ekholm's $6.25 million cap-hit, which runs through the 2025-26 season.
The Oilers always needed a defenseman, and they got a very, very good one in Ekholm. The 32-year old lines up perfectly with the Oilers contention window and their need.
Also, is Nashville sure they want to let GM David Poile retire? He is killing the trade deadline so far.
Who wins this trade?
