After retiring from the NHL in 2018, Jordan Tootoo recently released a book with some interesting stories from his days in the league. Today, a twitter user posted a page from the book which revealed a potential rule being broken by the Chicago Blackhawks organization.
Tootoo claims that he asked Chicago's GM (Stan Bowman at the time) to be placed on the LTIR instead of being sent to AHL Rockford, the team obliged. The picture can be found below.
Tootoo was a fan favourite during his time in the NHL for his hard nosed style of play. He is also known for being one of the most prominent indigenous players of the time and was also the first Inuk person to play in the NHL.
The discussion of whether teams are placing players on the LTIR for the purpose of not having their salary count towards the cap has been a common topic over the last few years. Vegas and Tampa Bay have both received criticism for this.
It's stories like this that make you question whether more teams than we think bend the rules to their absolute limit. It also makes it more difficult to draw the line on what is appropriate and what is abuse of the rule. Is an MRI all it takes to shed millions in dollars in cap?
As the twitter user stated, the NHL will not be pleased about this story and they have not released any sort of comment on the matter.
The Blackhawks are currently under new management, however it is not the first time that there was controversy during Stan Bowman's reign.
More details to follow.
