Shane Wright has Manny Malhotra tied to one of Vancouver's most interesting summer swings.

The reason this rumor sticks is simple. Reports now say Vancouver is Wright's preferred trade destination, which turns a normal trade market story into something much louder for the Canucks.

That matters because Wright still carries real draft weight. He was the No. 4 pick in 2022, and Seattle has not buried him, but it also has not unlocked him.

The last season tells you why a fresh start is even on the table. Wright finished 2025-26 with 12 goals and 27 points in 74 games, a sharp step back after his 44-point season the year before.

Seattle's side is easy to understand. The Kraken missed the playoffs again and finished 34-37-11 with 79 points, so they are clearly willing to test what Wright can bring back in a bigger move.

Vancouver's side makes just as much sense. The Canucks hired Malhotra as head coach last month, and Ryan Johnson is already reshaping the roster and the direction of the organization.

Wright is also the kind of bet a retooling club can talk itself into fast. He is only 22, shoots right, and still looks like a player whose value could jump hard if the role gets cleaner. That is an inference from his age, draft slot, and usage arc.

Shane Wright reportedly has one team at the top of his trade list : Vancouver

This is where the report gets interesting. Vancouver was dreadful in 2025-26, finishing 25-49-8 and last in the Western Conference, which means there is room for a young center to walk in and matter right away.

That opportunity may be exactly what Wright is chasing. In Seattle, he finished only 10th on the team in average power-play time last season, and that is not the profile of a young center being handed the keys.

The catch is the price. One report tied to this rumor said Seattle has been asking about premium defensive prospects such as Tom Willander or Zeev Buium, which is where the Canucks would have to think hard.

That is why this does not feel automatic. Wright wanting Vancouver is one thing. Vancouver paying Seattle's full ask is another. That is an inference based on the reported prospect cost and Wright's current production.

Still, the fit is real enough to keep pushing this story. The Canucks need middle-lane upside, Wright needs a cleaner runway, and both sides look like they are sitting in exactly the kind of summer where a gamble starts making sense.
