Despite the effort from Caufield, the Canadiens lost 4-3 in a shootout to the New York Islanders last night. After the game, he showed frustration as he was clearly upset about the result. However, he may also have been frustrated on a personal level as he got a season-low 14:36 of ice time despite the fact that the game went to a shootout and he had no time on the powerplay. However, this boiled over after a comment on his shoulder came from a reporter. He brushed off the question and called it out, but has now been taking criticism for it.
Montreal Canadiens director Chantal Machabee even had to get involved.
Caufield figures to be a huge part of the team's success this season, especially considering the fact that Patrik Laine will miss a big part of the season after getting injured in the preseason. He already has six goals, helping the team secure five points through their first six games. While that pace won't be enough for the team to get into the playoffs, they are on pace to take a step up from last season. Furthermore, help up front may not be coming as many fans expected. Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras was linked to the team in trade rumors, but that possibility appears to have fallen apart.
Regardless of how the rest of the team performs, Caufield appears to be on pace for a career year. So far, the 24-year-old has made big improvements in his scoring pace every season of his young career. In his first full season in the league he had 23 goals and 43 points in 67 games. Then he had 26 goals and 36 points in 46 games two seasons ago and followed that up with a true breakout season last year, potting 28 goals and 65 points in 82 points. So far this year he has 7 points including 6 goals through 6 games. In fact, it has been a historically good start to the season for him.
Be sure to stay tuned to see how Caufield and the rest of the Canadiens hold up this season as they look to climb out of their rebuild and into the playoff picture.
