Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin punished by the NHL Department of Player Safety

The Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin was punished by the NHL's Department of Player Safety for an incident that occurred last night against the Florida Panthers.

In an Atlantic Division showdown, the Buffalo Sabres and the Florida Panthers jumped on the ice last night for the second time this season. Paul Maurice and the Panthers were looking forward to bouncing back from their 5-2 loss against the same Sabres, two weeks ago.

The 2023-24 Stanley Cup champions came out strong and beat the Sabres 5-2 in Aleksander Barkov 's return from his lower-body injury that forced him to miss the last eight games.

During the game, an incident occurred between the Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin and Anton Lundell. In a battle for the puck, Dahlin hit Lundell in the face with his stick.

In breaking news, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced that Dahlin would need to pay a $5,000 fine for high-sticking, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

They announced the verdict on X:

It's hard to know for sure what Dahlin's intentions were, but considering the speed of the play and that both players were trying to get back on their skates as fast as possible, it doesn't look like Dahlin wanted to hit Lundell in the face.

Lundell scored his 12th point of the season before being hit. He tallied an assist on Jesper Boqvist's goal:

The Panthers will be flying to Finland today, for two games against the Dallas Stars on Friday and Saturday. Even though Lundell left the last game after Dahlin's hit, he should be able to play this weekend, in his home country.
