Esa Tikkanen, who won five Stanley Cups during his time in the NHL, has been sentenced in a court in Finland for failing to pay his taxes.

Five-time Stanley Cup champion Esa Tikkanen has finally ended his court battle over his failure to pay taxes on money earned abroad between 2015 and 2019.

Esa Tikkanen has been involved in a court case for a few months after he was accused of failing to pay taxes totalling just over $17,000 USD.

The 59 year old has received a one-year suspended prison sentence.

He can avoid going to jail at all if he follows the conditions set out by the judge.

Tikkanen at first denied not paying the taxes. He then said they weren't paid because he wasn't aware he had to. Any money owing in taxes has since been paid back.

"Tikkanen's conduct has covered a total of five tax years, the crime has also lasted a long time and therefore the tax fraud is also gross when assessed as a whole, the Western Uusimaa District Court wrote."

Tikkanen's career in the NHL spanned more than 800 regular season games, as well as another 186 postseason games.

Four of Tikkanen's Stanley Cups came with the Edmonton Oilers (1985, 1987, 1988, 1990), while his fifth was with the New York Rangers (1994).

Outside the Rangers and Oilers, Tikkanen also played for the St. Louis Blues, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Washington Capitals.

According to court documents, the money Tikkanen failed to pay taxes on was earned by working for gaming company Unibet as a hockey expert and in advertising.
