Adam Engstrom is heading back to Laval, and Martin St-Louis didn’t waste any time after the Canadiens punched their ticket to Round 2.

That’s the part that stands out here.

Montreal advanced Sunday night, then turned around Monday and sent a defenseman back to the Rocket.

It’s a clean message from the coaching staff.

It's quite relieving for Canadiens fans as well, as it confirms that Noah Dobson is indeed at 100% and there is no uncertainty that Engstrom may have to step into his place.

The Canadiens are moving deeper into the playoffs with a set blue line, and Engstrom isn’t in that first-wave plan right now.

That doesn’t make this a knock on the 22-year-old.

It makes it a roster decision tied to timing, trust, and how tight the bench gets once every shift starts to matter even more.

Montreal just came through a 2-1 Game 7 win over Tampa Bay to reach the second round.

The next series now shifts to Buffalo, with Game 1 set for Wednesday night.

The bigger point is that St-Louis clearly wants clarity on the back end before that puck drop.

No extra debate, no grey area, no lingering audition.

Montreal trims the blue line fast with Adam Engstrom send down

Teams don’t make this move a day after a series win unless they already know where a player sits. Engstrom gave the Canadiens depth, mobility, and another left-shot option, but the coaching staff has its preferred six.

That matters because Montreal didn’t sneak into this spot.

They also allowed 256 goals across 82 games in the regular season.

That number tells you this group can play with structure, and St-Louis has leaned on that all year.

Sending Engstrom out now also keeps Laval stocked at the right moment.

That’s good asset management from the organization, especially with the Rocket still playing meaningful hockey of their own.

There’s also no reason to keep a young defenseman parked in the press box once roles are locked in.

Better to have him playing than sitting around waiting for an injury or a rough night on the blue line.

And make no mistake, that call-up window can swing back open fast in May.

One bad bounce, one tweak, one schedule squeeze, and depth starts getting tested again.

For now, though, this is about a contender tightening its playoff roster.

The Canadiens are in the second round, Martin St-Louis knows his defense group, and Adam Engstrom is the name heading out.
