The numbers behind the call are not exactly comforting. Luukkonen has gone 1-1 with an .821 save percentage in two playoff appearances, a far cry from his regular-season work.
During the year, the 27-year-old Finn finished 20-9-3 in 35 games with a .908 save percentage and one shutout for a Buffalo team that piled up 109 points.
So why the switch now? Because Alex Lyon, the man who replaced him, has not stabilized the crease either, posting a .921 save percentage across his eight playoff starts.
Sabres lean on a $4.75M starter who has not played in weeks
This is the part that should make Sabres fans uneasy. Ruff is asking a goaltender carrying a $4.75 million cap hit to walk in cold and steal a game in the second round.
Cold goalies in the playoffs are like cars left in a driveway through winter. They look fine. Then you turn the key.
Luukkonen finished fourth in overall standings work with Buffalo, a club that went 26-10-5 at home and 24-13-4 on the road during a 50-win regular season.
But regular-season polish does not survive a long sit. Reps matter at this time of year, and he has none in nearly two weeks of real game action.
The bigger question is what this says about Ruff's read of the room. If Lyon were giving him answers, the change does not happen.
And if the Sabres lose tonight in a hole?
Ruff will own this call. He picked the starter coming off a difficult result and a save percentage that would not survive an AHL season. The bench will be watching every shot.
