The Canadiens moved on from Sean Farrell Monday, sending the forward to the Ducks in a straight swap for winger Sasha Pastujov.
Kent Hughes made the call, and Montreal confirmed it on social media within hours, calling it a forward-for-forward trade with Anaheim.
Farrell is headed to a Ducks group that just wrapped up a 43-33-6 season, good for 92 points and 17th overall in the league.
Pastujov walks into the opposite situation. Montreal finished 48-24-10 for 106 points, sixth overall and third in its division.
That's a massive gap in team direction for two forwards swapping addresses on the same afternoon.
Montreal actually played Anaheim twice this year and lost both times, a 5-6 shootout defeat away and a 3-4 loss at home nine days later.
Is this trade a win for the Canadiens? Nobody can answer that honestly yet. It's two young forwards betting a new zip code fixes what the old one couldn't.
What this trade really says about Montreal's forward depth
Farrell never fully locked down a permanent role in Montreal's lineup, and now that search continues in Anaheim under Joel Quenneville.
Pastujov gets a clean slate in a Habs organization that has shown, all season, it will shuffle its bottom six without much hesitation.
Martin St-Louis runs a lineup that rewards forwards who produce in a hurry. Whether Pastujov gets the same leash Farrell got remains to be seen.
Think of it like two players swapping keys to different apartments in the same building. Same league, same grind, completely different view out the window.
Kent Hughes and Pat Verbeek both walk away from this one with a change-of-scenery bet on their books.
Neither team gave up a d-man, a top-line scorer, or a first-round pick to make it happen. That alone tells you where both sides valued this swap.
