"Don't be sad it's over, be happy it happened. Thanks hockey, I owe ya," Ingram wrote.
That's a real way to end a career, choosing gratitude over any lingering frustration about how the timing played out. Not every announcement lands that way.
Ingram had been considered the best free-agent goaltender still available on the open board just days ago, coming off a season with 16 wins and two shutouts.
His 2.60 goals against average last season was solid enough that plenty expected a one-way contract worth around $1,000,000 once someone finally stepped up.

Is it fair that a goaltender this capable had his free agency effectively held hostage by a completely unrelated trade saga all summer long?
Retiring on your own terms, with a message this warm, is still a better ending than limping into camp on a tryout nobody ever actually offered.
My take: this says more about how stuck the entire goaltending market got this summer than it does about Ingram's actual ability to still play at this level.
Camp opens without him now, and one crowded goaltending carousel we've covered all summer just lost a name that had genuinely been part of it.
