Simon Edvinsson's contract situation in Detroit could finally be resolved within a day.

Insider Kevin Allen reported Tuesday that the Red Wings are aiming to get an extension done by Thursday.

"I think they're gonna try to get this done by tomorrow," Allen said on The Sheet.

That's real urgency for a negotiation that's been sitting unresolved through most of the summer.

Edvinsson posted 25 points in 72 games last season, chipping in a plus-12 rating for a Red Wings team that finished 41-31-10.

He's already committed to attending training camp regardless of his contract status, giving Detroit some breathing room while this deal gets finalized.

Interim GM Shawn Horcoff has been given authority to negotiate contracts since taking over, and Edvinsson's extension is exactly the kind of deal that authority was meant to cover.

Why getting this done matters beyond one contract

Locking up a 23-year-old defenseman viewed as one of Detroit's most important long-term pieces sends a real signal after a summer defined by front office chaos.

Detroit still hasn't resolved Dylan Larkin's trade request, and it went two full months without a permanent GM before Horcoff stepped into the interim role.

Getting an Edvinsson deal done quickly gives this organization at least one clean answer heading into camp, even while the Larkin situation drags on unresolved.

Edvinsson's cap hit currently sits at $894,166 on his entry-level deal, and any extension will reflect real belief in his long-term upside on Detroit's blue line.

Head coach Todd McLellan gets clarity on a core piece of his defense before puck drop, something this organization hasn't had much of all summer.

If this gets finalized Thursday as reported, it's a small step toward stability for a front office that's had very little of it since Yzerman's firing in July.
