Dylan McIlrath is drawing in for Matt Roy as Spencer Carbery reshapes the Washington Capitals blue line for Wednesday night.
Roy is unavailable because of injury, opening a spot for McIlrath and giving Washington a very different type of presence on defense.
McIlrath isn't coming into the lineup to replace Roy shift for shift. His game is built around size, physical pressure and making opposing forwards work for every inch around the crease.
That immediately changes the personality of Washington's back end. McIlrath is one of the NHL's true heavyweight fighters, and very few opponents are eager to challenge him physically.
His presence also gives the Capitals another option when games turn nasty along the boards or after whistles. Washington knows exactly what McIlrath brings when he's dressed.

For Carbery, the bigger issue will be managing the defensive minutes created by Roy's absence. Other defensemen could be asked to handle tougher matchups and heavier special-teams work.
McIlrath brings heavyweight edge to Washington
McIlrath's assignment should be straightforward: defend hard around the net, keep his reads simple and give Washington dependable minutes without trying to manufacture offense from the blue line.
But his impact can reach beyond his own shifts. When a player with McIlrath's reputation is sitting on the Capitals bench, opponents know there's an answer available if the game becomes overly physical.
That matters for a Washington lineup carrying skilled forwards who want room to operate. McIlrath gives the Capitals another layer of protection without forcing one of those forwards into that role.
Roy's absence still hurts because Washington is losing an established NHL defenseman rather than simply rotating personnel. The Capitals will need the rest of the blue line to absorb that responsibility.
McIlrath won't be asked to become Roy. He'll be asked to play his own game, stay disciplined and make Washington harder to play against below the circles.
And on Wednesday night, that means the Capitals are replacing an injured defenseman with one of hockey's legitimate heavyweights.
Does Dylan McIlrath make the Capitals tougher to play against immediately?
