Despite flashes of the team the Toronto Maple Leafs have the potential to be, especially with the additions of former Arizona Coyotes captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and the rugged veteran Chris Tanev, the team is now sitting at 4-4-1, joining the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, and Ottawa Senators as .500 teams in their division.
For a team that was expected to be among the best in the league, this is unacceptable, and Craig Berube certainly hasn't minced his words. The Leafs' Core 4, who are somehow still all together, are all having rough starts to the season. John Tavares has regressed, playing slow and unengaged hockey, making it all more symbolic that he was stripped of the captaincy in favour of Auston Matthews. Matthews in his own right, however, is having a slow start, with only four goals and seven points in nine games, as well as the game-losing mistake in overtime against the Boston Bruins. Mitch Marner has been unspectacular, and William Nylander has been unable to produce when it's been important.
Craig Berube focused his criticism on William Nylander after the game against Boston, calling out the mounting frustration for the player, as well as the lack of chemistry on his line with Bobby McMann and Max Domi.
While all of these superbly talented players will likely bounce back, Craig Berube will be nothing but honest until it happens.
