Leon Draisaitl's Shows Lack or Respect to Wayne Gretzky In New Interview
Leon Draisaitl certainly has a first hand view of Connor McDavid's brilliance, but his latest comments spark controversy around Oilers legend Wayne Gretzky, who many consider to be the best hockey player of all time.
After a stellar start to his career, Connor McDavid sits at 999 points through just 658 career games, and it has some speculating that he could one day challenge the seemingly unthinkable record of Wayne Gretzky.
Those predictions seem a little premature, but given how well McDavid has played through the first nine years of his career, 2,000 points is certainly well within reach.
Given that he plays for the same team that Wayne Gretzky found the majority of his NHL success, the comparisons are unsurprising, but in a recent interview, Leon Draisaitl went much further than that.
Given that McDavid is the only captain Draisaitl has ever known in the NHL, achieving all of his success alongside 97, it's not surprising to see him make these types of comments, especially after locking himself in for potentially the rest of his career.
Objectively however, the likes of Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, Sidney Crosby and Gordie Howe among others are likely still ahead of McDavid, with this statement being a simple show of loyalty from 29.
One day though, if any current player outside of Crosby has the opportunity to make his way into the conversation, it's McDavid, but that needs to come with Stanley Cup success as well as sustained point totals, so now we will wait and see how the rest of his career plays out before making such judgements.
