It was announced today by NHL insider Kevin Weekes that the San Jose Sharks have traded Mikael Granlund to the Dallas Stars.

Granlund, whose career has been revived in San Jose after a difficult stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has 45 points in 52 games this season, and has re-emerged as one of the best second line centres in the NHL.

He will be joining a Dallas Stars group that has been plagued by injuries this season, losing top defenseman Miro Heiskanen this week, and veteran Tyler Seguin earlier in the year.

The team, whose top end talent features young studs like Jake Oettinger, Thomas Harley, Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, Logan Stankoven and Wyatt Johnston, as well as seasoned veterans Jamie Benn, Esa Lindell and Mason Marchment, will only get better with the addition of Granlund.

Per insider David Pagnotta, talks between the two parties have been ongoing for weeks, and intensified recently.

2022 18th overall pick Lian Bichsel, a towering 6-foot-6 defenseman, is reportedly a target of the San Jose Sharks, and may be part of the deal.

Top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has now confirmed that this deal will be happening, although the full trade call has not yet been announced.

We will see if Granlund can keep up his hot play, especially with arguably better linemates. The Dallas Stars just got a whole lot more competitive.

UPDATE

Per Friedman, defenseman Cody Ceci is also involved in the deal to the Dallas Stars.

In exchange for the two players, the Dallas Stars will trade San Jose a first round pick and a fourth round pick.

If the Stars make the Stanley Cup Final, that fourth round pick will become a third round pick.
