The Vancouver Canucks have made several major deals recently.
The team was mired in drama all season long prior to them trading JT Miller to the New York Rangers.
Immediately after they made the deal they made another trade, acquiring two key players from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
One of those players was 28-year-old defenseman Marcus Pettersson.
Pettersson was on the final year of his contract which came with a cap hit of just over 4 million dollars.
Now, the team has locked him up long-term, signing Pettersson to a six-year contract that carries a cap hit of 5.5 million dollars per season.
He also has a full no move clause with the deal, giving him long-term security in Vancouver.
Pettersson has 3 goals and 18 points in 49 games this season. In his career he has 17 goals and 151 points in 493 games.
Fan reaction is a bit mixed with some concerned about the length of the deal, but most fans seem to be happy about it.
Some fans have pointed to the fact that the team could have spent that money on a similar defenseman, but in the end everything worked out.
Specifically, many fans were upset when the team let Nikita Zadorov walk in free agency last summer, but statistically speaking, Pettersson is the better player.
It will be interesting to see if the Canucks attempt to re-sign any of the other players they acquired in trades this year, so be sure to keep an eye out for that.
Furthermore, the Canucks are rumored to still be making more moves ahead of the March 7th trade deadline, so they are certainly one of the most interesting teams to watch over the next few weeks.
